ABOUT ME
I’m a professional writer and developmental editor. I take my hard-won literature degree, my own experience as a published author, and 30 years of commercial writing and editing to help writers, publishers and companies turn out the most polished, engaging and impactful copy possible.
As a serial entrepreneur, and a long-time sports journalist, I specialise in literary fiction, non-fiction Business and Sports books and publications - including history, autobiography, biography and memoir. I'm also an Indexer, and an entry-level member of The Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, as well as a Professional Member of the International Association of Professional Writers & Editors.

Developmental Editing
A developmental editor works with authors to lend an educated eye to the overarching structure of their manuscript. Think of a developmental editor as a book "coach". We'll look at theme, structure, pace, tone, character development, use of language, as well as the work's purpose, market position and publishing possibilities.
Good developmental editing is seeing the WOOD and the TREES.
Publishing
A range of services designed to help the self-published author through the myriad of issues involved with turning your precious work into print, or getting it online. A cradle to grave helping hand from someone who’s been there, seen it and done it, and passed through the inevitable pain barriers.

PRICING & PROCESS

I know you'd love to see a neat table of costs or a rough estimate of fees. Unfortunately there really is no one-size-fits-all approach to any editing project so every manuscript needs to be assessed on its own merits. For guidance, I take my cue from The Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (https://www.ciep.uk/resources/suggested-minimum-rates) but to give you an accurate idea of costs I need to assess the following:

Timescale (when you’d like me to start work, and your deadline for completion)

Which service you need (don’t worry – we’ll discuss this in depth before we start)

Details about the work: for example, is it fiction or non-fiction, autobiography or thesis, commercial or private?
I also ask to see a small sample of the work to assess the degree of intervention required.
I’m equally comfortable offering a fixed-fee service based on word count or I can give hour or day rates depending on what works for you.
